Air Suspension

If your Land Rover has air suspension, this is where the money goes, and catching it early is the difference between one repair and three.

The system uses air springs at each corner, fed by a compressor and controlled through a valve block. It gives the ride quality and the ride height adjustment these vehicles are known for. It also has rubber components that perish with age, road salt and cold, and North East winters supply all three.

The signs to watch for:

• The vehicle sitting down on one corner overnight, then rising when started.
• A suspension fault message or the vehicle refusing to change height.
• The compressor running for noticeably longer than it used to.
• The vehicle sitting low all round, or stuck in one height setting.
• A harsh, crashy ride where it used to be smooth.

The important part is the sequence. A leaking air spring makes the compressor work harder to keep the vehicle level. Run it like that for months and the compressor fails too, and often takes the dryer with it. Deal with the spring when it starts leaking and you replace one part rather than the system.

DPFs and the Short Journey Problem

This is the single most common Land Rover complaint we hear, and it is rarely a fault in the strict sense. It is a mismatch.

A diesel particulate filter collects soot and periodically burns it off in a regeneration cycle. Regeneration needs the exhaust properly hot, which needs sustained running at speed. Twenty minutes on a dual carriageway does it comfortably.

A Discovery Sport or an Evoque doing two school runs and a trip to the shops never gets there. The filter fills, a regeneration starts, the journey ends before it finishes, and the next attempt starts from a worse position. Do that for long enough and you get a warning light, then reduced power, then a bill.

None of that is the vehicle being unreliable. It is a vehicle built for one duty cycle being used for another.

What helps: a proper run at sustained speed every couple of weeks, the correct low-ash oil at the right interval, and getting a warning looked at when it first appears rather than after several ignored ones. If your Land Rover mainly does short journeys, tell us and we will factor it into what we recommend.

Ingenium Engines and the Oil Pump Belt

Worth knowing about if you have a more recent Land Rover, because it is not a conventional cambelt and it gets missed.

Some Ingenium engines use a belt running inside the engine in oil to drive the oil pump. It has its own replacement interval, quite separate from the timing arrangement, and because owners are not looking for it, it frequently goes unaddressed, particularly on vehicles bought used with a patchy history.

What that belt drives is the point. An oil pump that stops driving properly is not a component failure, it is an engine failure.

Electrical Faults

Land Rovers carry a great deal of electronics, and they have a reputation for the occasional gremlin. Warning lights that appear and clear themselves, modules that will not talk to each other, and drains that flatten a battery over a fortnight parked up.

The approach that works is the same as on anything else: read the codes across all modules, then test the circuit rather than replacing parts on the strength of a code. It takes longer than guessing and costs less than guessing wrong.

If You Tow

Towing changes the maintenance picture, and a good number of Land Rovers around here tow regularly.

Pulling a horsebox or a caravan loads the gearbox, transfer box, differentials, brakes and cooling system far harder than ordinary driving, and it raises fluid temperatures across the driveline. Heat is what degrades fluids, so a vehicle that tows reaches the point of needing fresh fluid well before the mileage suggests.

If you tow, say so when you book. Gearbox and transfer box fluids, brakes and cooling all deserve earlier attention than the standard schedule alone would put them.

Will Independent Servicing Affect Your Land Rover Warranty?

No. UK block exemption rules entitle you to have your vehicle serviced by an independent garage without affecting the manufacturer warranty.

The manufacturer's schedule must be followed, and the parts and fluids used must meet the manufacturer's specification. That is how we work.

You get a full invoice detailing the work carried out and the parts and fluids used. Keep those. On a Land Rover, a documented service history is worth a great deal at resale, because buyers know what an undocumented one tends to mean.
