Gearbox Oil: The Service Nobody Books

Most drivers know when their engine oil is due. Very few could tell you when the gearbox oil was last changed, and on plenty of cars the honest answer is never.

Some manufacturers describe the gearbox as filled for life. In practice that often means filled for the life of the warranty. Gearbox oil still breaks down under heat and load, and it collects fine metal debris from normal wear, which then circulates through the bearings and synchros.

A fresh fill is one of the cheapest pieces of preventative maintenance on a car, and it costs a small fraction of what a rebuild does. If your gearbox has never had an oil change and the car has serious mileage on it, it is worth a conversation.

Signs Your Gearbox Needs Attention

Gearboxes usually give plenty of warning:

• Difficulty selecting gears, especially first and reverse.
• Crunching or grinding when changing, often worse when cold.
• A whine or hum that rises and falls with road speed.

Broadly, if the car struggles to go into gear but drives normally once it is there, suspect the clutch not fully releasing, or worn linkages. If the car jumps out of gear, whines with road speed, or crunches even with a healthy clutch, the gearbox is more likely.
