Gearbox noisy, notchy or leaking? Early attention usually keeps it a small job.
Based in Westerhope, Newcastle upon Tyne, we service and repair gearboxes on cars and vans, covering oil changes, gear selection problems, linkage faults, leaks and automatic gearbox complaints.
Gearboxes are among the most neglected parts of a car, largely because nobody tells you they need anything until they need everything.

At West Auto, we keep things clear and practical from the start.
We work with drivers across Newcastle, Westerhope, West Denton, Chapel House, Chapel Park, Newbiggin Hall, Lemington, Denton Burn and the surrounding areas, servicing and repairing gearboxes on cars and vans.
If your vehicle needs wider attention, you are already in the right place. Our garage services include clutch repairs, repairs, servicing and MOTs.
Some manufacturers describe the gearbox as filled for life. In practice that often means filled for the life of the warranty. Gearbox oil still breaks down under heat and load, and it collects fine metal debris from normal wear, which then circulates through the bearings and synchros.
A fresh fill is one of the cheapest pieces of preventative maintenance on a car, and it costs a small fraction of what a rebuild does. If your gearbox has never had an oil change and the car has serious mileage on it, it is worth a conversation.
Broadly, if the car struggles to go into gear but drives normally once it is there, suspect the clutch not fully releasing, or worn linkages. If the car jumps out of gear, whines with road speed, or crunches even with a healthy clutch, the gearbox is more likely.
Plenty of cases sit in between, which is why we diagnose before quoting. Our clutch repairs page covers the clutch side in detail.
Common complaints we see are harsh or delayed shifts, hunting between gears, slipping under load, a shudder at low speed and transmission warning lights.
An oil and filter service resolves more of these than people expect, particularly on a box that has never had one, so it is worth asking whether yours is a candidate. It is not a cure for a failed unit, but on a tired box it is the sensible first step before anyone starts talking about rebuilds.
If yours is a DSG, CVT or another design with its own specific service requirements, tell us the vehicle and we will confirm what it needs.
Running a gearbox low on oil is how a failed seal turns into a failed gearbox. The seal is a modest job. What it protects is not.
If you have oil appearing under the middle of the car, get it identified. It may be the gearbox, it may be the engine, and it is worth knowing which.
At West Auto, you get:
What we can do is find out what is actually wrong before anyone spends anything, then give you a clear price for the work. If the sensible answer is a specialist or a replacement unit, you will hear that too.

Gearbox trouble is usually gradual. Second gear starts to baulk when the car is cold. There is a whine at forty that was not there last year. A small dark patch appears on the drive. At West Auto, we keep things clear and practical from the start.

Gearbox Oil: The Service Nobody Books
Most drivers know when their engine oil is due. Very few could tell you when the gearbox oil was last changed, and on plenty of cars the honest answer is never. Some manufacturers describe the gearbox as filled for life. In practice that often means filled for the life of the warranty. Gearbox oil still breaks down under heat and load, and it collects fine metal debris from normal wear, which then circulates through the bearings and synchros.

Signs Your Gearbox Needs Attention
Gearboxes usually give plenty of warning:- Difficulty selecting gears, especially first and reverse.
- Crunching or grinding when changing, often worse when cold.
- A whine or hum that rises and falls with road speed.
- Jumping out of gear, particularly on the overrun.
- A vague or notchy gear change.
- Oil patches under the middle of the car.
- Harsh, delayed or hunting shifts on an automatic.
- A gearbox or transmission warning light.
Is It the Gearbox or the Clutch?
From the driver's seat these feel almost identical, and getting the answer right matters, because they are very different bills.Broadly, if the car struggles to go into gear but drives normally once it is there, suspect the clutch not fully releasing, or worn linkages. If the car jumps out of gear, whines with road speed, or crunches even with a healthy clutch, the gearbox is more likely.

Gearbox Work We Carry Out

- Gear cable adjustment and replacement.
- Gearbox oil leaks and seal replacement.
- Input and output shaft seals.
- Gearbox mounting replacement.

- Automatic gearbox fault code diagnosis.
- Gearbox removal and refitting.
Automatic Gearboxes
Automatics are less forgiving of neglect than manuals, because the oil does more than lubricate. In most modern automatics it also transmits drive and operates the internal clutches, so its condition directly affects how the box shifts.Common complaints we see are harsh or delayed shifts, hunting between gears, slipping under load, a shudder at low speed and transmission warning lights.
An oil and filter service resolves more of these than people expect, particularly on a box that has never had one, so it is worth asking whether yours is a candidate. It is not a cure for a failed unit, but on a tired box it is the sensible first step before anyone starts talking about rebuilds.

Gearbox Oil Leaks
Gearboxes hold surprisingly little oil, so a leak that leaves only a modest patch on the drive can still leave the box running low.Running a gearbox low on oil is how a failed seal turns into a failed gearbox. The seal is a modest job. What it protects is not.
If you have oil appearing under the middle of the car, get it identified. It may be the gearbox, it may be the engine, and it is worth knowing which.

Gearbox Repair Costs
An oil change and a gearbox removal are at opposite ends of the scale, so there is no useful single figure. What we can do is find out what is actually wrong before anyone spends anything, then give you a clear price for the work. If the sensible answer is a specialist or a replacement unit, you will hear that too.

Gearbox FAQs
Does gearbox oil need changing?
On most vehicles, yes, even where it is described as filled for life. Gearbox oil breaks down and picks up wear debris over time, and a fresh fill is far cheaper than a rebuild. Intervals vary by vehicle, so it is worth asking what yours specifies.
Why is my gearbox whining or noisy?
A whine that changes with road speed usually points to bearings or gear wear, and low or degraded oil often makes it worse. A noise that changes when you press the clutch is more likely clutch-related. Either way it is worth investigating early rather than waiting.
Why is my car hard to get into gear?
Not always the gearbox itself. Worn linkages or cables, a clutch that is not fully releasing, or low and contaminated oil can all cause it. Diagnosis matters here, because the cheap causes and the expensive ones feel very similar from the driver's seat.
Do you service automatic gearboxes?
Automatics vary a great deal and what is possible depends on the vehicle, so give us your registration and we will tell you what we can do for yours. We can diagnose faults such as harsh or delayed shifts, slipping and warning lights. Some internal automatic rebuilds are specialist work, and we will tell you honestly if a vehicle is better going to a transmission specialist.
Is a gearbox oil leak serious?
It can become serious quickly. Gearboxes hold a relatively small amount of oil, so a leak that looks minor on the driveway can leave the box running low, and running a gearbox low on oil causes damage that costs far more than the seal would have.
