Why Does My Battery Keep Going Flat?

This is the single most common electrical complaint we hear, and the battery itself is usually not the culprit, especially if it has already been replaced once.

There are two likely causes. The first is a parasitic drain, where something stays awake after you lock the car and quietly empties the battery overnight. A module that will not go to sleep, a boot or glovebox light staying on, a badly wired accessory or an aftermarket alarm are all common.

The second is a charging fault. If the alternator is not putting back what the car uses, the battery runs down over days of driving rather than sitting.

How We Trace Electrical Faults

There is no shortcut. Plugging in a code reader tells you which circuit has complained, not what is wrong with it. That is the starting point, not the answer.

• Listen to what the vehicle is actually doing, and when.
• Read stored fault codes across all modules.
• Work the circuit with a multimeter and wiring diagrams.
• Test voltage drop and continuity under load, not just at rest.
• Check earths and connectors, which cause more faults than most people expect.
