Signs Your Battery Is on the Way Out

Batteries usually warn you before they strand you, as long as you know what to listen for:

• Slow or laboured cranking, particularly first thing on a cold morning.
• Dim headlights at idle that brighten when you rev.

• Parasitic drain, if something is emptying the battery overnight.

Why New Batteries Go Flat

If you have already replaced the battery and it is still going flat, the battery was never the problem.

The usual causes are a parasitic drain, where a module, light or aftermarket accessory stays awake after you lock the car, or a charging fault, where the alternator is not replacing what the vehicle uses while you drive.

AGM, EFB and Stop-Start Batteries

If your vehicle has stop-start, it almost certainly needs an AGM or EFB battery rather than a conventional one.

Stop-start systems restart the engine dozens of times on a single journey, and a standard battery is not built for that kind of cycling. Fit one anyway and it will fail early, often within a year.

On many modern vehicles the new battery also needs registering to the battery management system, so the car charges it correctly. Skip that step and the new battery gets charged as though it were the old, tired one, which shortens its life. Ask us about your vehicle when you book and we will tell you what it needs.

Making a Battery Last Longer

Short journeys are the biggest killer. Starting the engine takes a lot out of a battery, and a ten-minute drive does not put it all back, so a car used only for the school run and the shops is on a slow decline.

A longer run every couple of weeks helps. If a vehicle sits unused for long stretches, a decent trickle charger is a sound investment, and it costs far less than a battery.

Cold weather rarely kills a good battery on its own. It simply exposes one that was already weak, which is why so many fail on the first proper frost of the year.
