Brakes squealing, grinding or feeling soft? Get them checked before they get worse.
Based in Westerhope, Newcastle upon Tyne, we inspect and repair brakes on cars and vans, from pads and discs to calipers, hoses, brake fluid and handbrake faults.
Brakes are the one system on your car where leaving it another month is not worth the saving.
Call West Auto on 0191 271 1605 or enquire online to get booked in.
At West Auto, we keep things clear and practical from the start.
We work with drivers across Newcastle, Westerhope, West Denton, Chapel House, Chapel Park, Newbiggin Hall, Lemington, Denton Burn and the surrounding areas, keeping brakes in safe working order on cars and vans.
If your vehicle needs wider attention, you are already in the right place. Our garage services include servicing, repairs, tyres and MOTs.
Discs have a manufacturer minimum thickness, and a healthy set will often see out two sets of pads. If yours are within limits and in good condition, we will fit pads only and tell you roughly how much life the discs have left.
Discs do need replacing when they are worn below minimum thickness, deeply scored, badly lipped at the edge, warped, or cracked. In those cases new pads on old discs will not bed in properly and you will be back with judder or noise soon enough.
We measure rather than guess, and we will show you what we found.
Most manufacturers specify a fluid change every two years. It is inexpensive, quick, and one of the most commonly skipped jobs on a service schedule.
If you cannot remember when your brake fluid was last changed, it is probably due.
Common failures include worn pads and discs, brakes that are uneven side to side, fluid leaks, corroded pipes, perished hoses and a handbrake that will not hold.
If your MOT is coming up and something does not feel right, get it looked at first. A brake fail is one of the more expensive ways to lose a test day.
At West Auto, you get:
We inspect first, tell you exactly what needs doing and what can safely wait, then give you a clear price before any work goes ahead.
Give us your registration when you call and we can give you a good idea over the phone.
We are based in Westerhope, Newcastle-upon-Tyne and are open Monday to Friday.

Do Discs Need Changing With the Pads?
Not automatically, whatever you may have been told elsewhere.Discs have a manufacturer minimum thickness, and a healthy set will often see out two sets of pads.

Brake Fluid: The Job Everyone Forgets
Brake fluid is hygroscopic, which means it absorbs moisture from the air over time. That moisture lowers the boiling point, and under heavy or repeated braking the fluid can boil, leaving you with a pedal that goes soft or long exactly when you need it not to.Most manufacturers specify a fluid change every two years. It is inexpensive, quick, and one of the most commonly skipped jobs on a service schedule.
If you cannot remember when your brake fluid was last changed, it is probably due.
Brakes and the MOT
Brakes are one of the most heavily tested areas of the MOT. The test measures braking efficiency and balance on a rolling road, and inspects pads, discs, hoses, pipes and the handbrake.Common failures include worn pads and discs, brakes that are uneven side to side, fluid leaks, corroded pipes, perished hoses and a handbrake that will not hold.
If your MOT is coming up and something does not feel right, get it looked at first. A brake fail is one of the more expensive ways to lose a test day.

Brake FAQs
How long do brake pads last?
Anywhere between 25,000 and 50,000 miles, depending on how and where you drive. Stop-start town driving wears pads far faster than motorway miles, and front pads generally wear quicker than rears.
Why are my brakes squealing or grinding?
A light squeal can be surface rust or dust and often clears after a few stops. A persistent squeal usually means the wear indicator is touching the disc. A metallic grinding sound means the pad material has gone and metal is contacting the disc, which needs looking at straight away.
Do brake discs need replacing with the pads?
Not always. Discs have a minimum thickness and can often take two sets of pads. If they are within limits and in good condition, we fit pads only. If they are worn thin, scored, lipped or warped, they need replacing.
How often should brake fluid be changed?
Usually every two years. Brake fluid absorbs moisture over time, which lowers its boiling point and can make the pedal go soft under heavy braking. It is a cheap job that is easy to overlook.
Will worn brakes fail the MOT?
Yes. The MOT tests braking efficiency and balance on a rolling road and inspects the condition of pads, discs, hoses and the handbrake. Worn or contaminated components, leaks and poor performance are all failure items.
