That means we see a lot of them, in every condition, at every mileage.
At West Auto, we keep things clear and practical from the start.
We work with Nissan drivers across Newcastle, Westerhope, West Denton, Chapel House, Chapel Park, Newbiggin Hall, Lemington, Denton Burn and the surrounding areas.
If your Nissan needs more than a service, you are already in the right place. Our garage services include servicing, diagnostics, repairs and MOTs.
A CVT does not work like a conventional automatic. Instead of fixed gears it uses a belt or chain running between variable pulleys, and the fluid does not simply lubricate. It transmits the drive. The friction between belt and pulley depends on the fluid's properties, so as the fluid degrades, the gearbox's ability to do its job degrades with it.
Heat is what kills it. Towing, heavy loads, stop-start town traffic and long hill climbs all raise fluid temperature, and North East driving supplies plenty of all four.
Watch for:
There is no engine oil, no filters for it, no spark plugs and no exhaust. What a LEAF does need is brake fluid, cabin filter, brake inspection, suspension and steering checks, tyres, and an MOT once it is three years old.
Two things behave differently on an EV, and both catch owners out:
That means the engine spends most of its life running at steady, efficient loads rather than being revved through a gearbox, which is easy on it. It still needs oil and filters on schedule, and it still benefits from the same regenerative braking pattern described above, discs included.
Tell us the model and year when you call and we will confirm what yours needs.
The manufacturer's schedule must be followed, and the parts and fluids used must meet the manufacturer's specification. That is how we work.
You get a full invoice detailing the work carried out and the parts and fluids used. Keep those. They are your service record and your evidence if a warranty question ever arises.
At West Auto, you get:
Give us your registration and mileage when you call and we will tell you what your Nissan is due, what the service covers, and what it will cost. If your car has a CVT and no record of a fluid change, mention it when you call.
We are based in Westerhope, Newcastle-upon-Tyne and are open Monday to Friday.

Your Local Independent Nissan Garage in Westerhope, Newcastle
Nissan and the North East are not a casual association. The cars come off the line at Sunderland, plenty of the people driving them work there or in the supply chain, and the Qashqai in particular is about as common a sight on Tyneside roads as anything gets. That means we see a lot of them, in every condition, at every mileage.

CVT Gearbox Fluid: The Job That Saves the Gearbox
If your Nissan has an automatic, it is very likely an Xtronic CVT, and this is the most important section on this page.A CVT does not work like a conventional automatic.
Watch for:
- Shuddering or juddering when pulling away.
- A delay before drive engages after selecting D or R.
- Revs climbing without the speed following.
- A whine that rises and falls with road speed.
- Reduced power mode or a transmission warning.
- Jerky progress at low speed in traffic.
Nissan LEAF and Electric Servicing
Electric cars still need servicing. Fewer things, but the things that remain matter more.
- Brakes corrode rather than wear. Regenerative braking does most of the slowing, so pads last a long time while discs sit lightly used and rust. EVs often need discs long before pads. See brakes.
- Weight tells on tyres and suspension. An electric car is significantly heavier than the petrol equivalent, and delivers its torque instantly. Tyres wear faster and suspension components work harder. See tyres and suspension.
Nissan e-POWER
Newer Qashqai and X-Trail models use e-POWER, which works differently from a conventional hybrid. The wheels are driven entirely by the electric motor, and the petrol engine acts purely as a generator, never driving the wheels directly.
Will Independent Servicing Affect Your Nissan Warranty?
No. UK block exemption rules entitle you to have your vehicle serviced by an independent garage without affecting the manufacturer warranty. The manufacturer's schedule must be followed, and the parts and fluids used must meet the manufacturer's specification. That is how we work.
You get a full invoice detailing the work carried out and the parts and fluids used. Keep those. They are your service record and your evidence if a warranty question ever arises.

Nissan Servicing FAQs
Does a Nissan CVT gearbox need a fluid change?
Yes, and it is one of the most important jobs on a CVT-equipped Nissan. Xtronic CVT gearboxes rely on their fluid to transmit drive as well as lubricate, and the fluid degrades with heat. Neglected fluid is the single most common route to CVT problems, and a fluid service costs a fraction of a replacement gearbox.
What are the signs of CVT trouble on a Qashqai or X-Trail?
Shuddering or juddering when pulling away, a delay before drive engages, revs climbing without matching acceleration, whining that rises with speed, or the car dropping into a reduced power mode. Any of these warrant getting the fluid condition checked promptly.
Will independent servicing affect my Nissan warranty?
No. UK block exemption rules entitle you to have your vehicle serviced by an independent garage without affecting the manufacturer warranty, provided the manufacturer schedule is followed and the parts and fluids meet specification. Keep the invoices as your service record.
Does a Nissan LEAF need servicing?
Yes. There is no engine oil to change, but a LEAF still needs brake fluid, cabin filter, brake and tyre inspection, suspension checks and an annual MOT once it is three years old. Electric cars are heavier than the equivalent petrol model, so tyres and suspension components deserve particular attention.
Does a Nissan have a cambelt?
Most modern Nissan petrol engines use a timing chain rather than a belt. Some diesel engines in the range do use a belt with a defined replacement interval. Give us your registration and we will confirm which yours has and when it is due.
