EcoBoost Wet Belts: Check Your Interval

If you drive a Ford EcoBoost petrol, read this section even if you read nothing else on the page.

Many EcoBoost engines, and several EcoBlue diesels, use a timing belt that runs inside the engine in oil rather than dry behind a cover. It is a design that works well when maintained and causes serious damage when it is not.

Here is the part that catches people out. Guidance on when these belts should be replaced has been revised since a good number of these vehicles were sold, and revised in a shorter direction. Owners who were told at purchase that the belt would see out the life of the engine are, in many cases, working from information that has since changed.

That matters because of how these belts fail. The belt degrades in the oil, and the material that comes off it can find its way to the oil pickup. A blocked pickup means oil starvation, and oil starvation on a running engine is not a repair, it is a replacement.

Ford's Service Schedule

Ford keeps this refreshingly simple compared with some manufacturers. Rather than a variable system that calculates its own intervals, Ford generally works to a fixed schedule: annually or at a set mileage, whichever comes first.

On top of that, individual items fall due at their own longer intervals. Spark plugs, air and fuel filters, brake fluid and coolant all have their own schedules, which is why two services on the same car can differ considerably in content and cost.

High-mileage vehicles reach the mileage trigger well before the year is up, which is why vans often need servicing more than once in a twelve-month period. That is the schedule working correctly rather than anyone being over-serviced.

Will Independent Servicing Affect Your Ford Warranty?

No. UK block exemption rules entitle you to have your vehicle serviced by an independent garage without affecting the manufacturer warranty.

The manufacturer's schedule must be followed, and the parts and fluids used must meet the manufacturer's specification. That is how we work.

Ford Oil Specifications

Ford runs its own oil specification standards, and different engines call for different ones. EcoBoost petrols and EcoBlue diesels do not take the same oil, and a viscosity grade alone does not tell you whether an oil is correct.

On a Ford this carries extra weight for two reasons. Diesels with a particulate filter need a low-ash oil or the filter accumulates ash and blocks. And on wet belt engines, the oil is in direct contact with the timing belt, so oil quality and change intervals directly affect how long that belt lasts.

On an engine where the belt lives in the oil, the oil is not just lubrication. It is part of the timing system.
