What Wheel Balancing Actually Is

No wheel and tyre assembly is perfectly even in weight all the way round. The differences are tiny, often only a few grams, but a wheel at 70mph is turning around 800 times a minute, and a few grams out of balance becomes a noticeable shake at that speed.

Balancing corrects it. The wheel is spun on a balancing machine, which measures exactly where the imbalance sits and how heavy it is. Small counterweights are then fitted to the rim to even it out.

Done properly, the wheel spins smoothly, the vibration disappears, and the tyre wears evenly across its surface.

Signs Your Wheels Need Balancing

Balancing faults are among the easier ones to identify from the driver's seat:

• Vibration through the steering wheel, usually appearing somewhere between 50 and 70mph.

Alignment is about the angles the wheels sit at. It fixes pulling, wandering and an off-centre steering wheel. If your car drives straight but veers to one side, you need alignment.

They are separate jobs on separate equipment, and one will not fix the other. Plenty of people pay for alignment hoping to cure a vibration and are understandably disappointed.
