Why Is My Car Pulling to One Side?

This is the most common steering complaint, and the cause is usually simpler than people fear.

Start with tyre pressures. Uneven pressures across an axle will pull a car noticeably, and it costs nothing to check.

Next is wheel alignment. Kerbs and potholes knock the geometry out, and once it is out the car drifts and the tyres wear unevenly with it.

Beyond that: uneven tyre wear or mismatched tyres, a sticking brake caliper dragging on one side, or a worn suspension or steering component allowing movement where there should be none.

Wheel Alignment and Tracking

Alignment is how your wheels sit relative to each other and to the road. When it drifts out, three things follow: the car pulls or wanders, the steering wheel sits off-centre, and the tyres wear unevenly, often taking a shoulder off one edge.

That last one is what makes alignment worth doing. A set of tyres ruined early by poor alignment costs considerably more than the alignment would have.

Power Steering Faults

Most cars use one of two systems, and the fault patterns differ.

Hydraulic power steering uses a belt-driven pump and fluid. When it goes heavy, the usual causes are low fluid from a leak, a failing pump, or a worn or slipping belt. Groaning when turning at low speed is the classic symptom, and it is often accompanied by fluid on the driveway.

Electric power steering uses a motor rather than fluid, so there is nothing to leak or top up. Faults are usually electrical or control-related, and they normally bring a warning light with them.

Either way, do not just keep topping up fluid and hoping. Fluid that disappears is going somewhere, and running a pump dry is how a leak becomes a replacement.

Steering and the MOT

Steering is thoroughly examined in the MOT. The tester checks for excessive play, worn track rod ends and ball joints, damaged or leaking steering racks, split rack gaiters and the condition of the power steering system.

Split rack gaiters are a particularly common fail, and an annoying one, because a torn gaiter lets water and grit into the rack and turns a cheap part into an expensive one if it is left.

Wheel alignment itself is not tested, but the uneven tyre wear it causes very much is.
