Oil does not just lubricate. It carries heat away from the hottest parts of the engine, keeps combustion by-products in suspension so they do not form sludge, protects against corrosion, and on many modern engines it operates hydraulic systems such as variable valve timing.

All of that degrades with use. Oil thins, additives deplete, and it fills with soot and fine metal particles from normal wear. Old oil does not stop being oil, it just stops doing several of those jobs properly.

The engine is the most expensive component in the car. Fresh oil is among the cheapest things you can put in it.

The Right Oil for Your Engine

This is where oil changes go wrong, and it is not always visible until much later.

Modern engines specify oil in two ways: a viscosity grade such as 5W-30, and a manufacturer approval or specification. Both matter. An oil can be the right viscosity and still be entirely wrong for the engine.

Get it wrong and the consequences are real. Variable valve timing systems rely on oil of the correct viscosity to work properly. Turbochargers depend on it for cooling as much as lubrication. On diesels with a DPF, using a non-compliant oil produces excess ash that clogs the filter, and DPFs are not cheap.

How Often?

Start with what your manufacturer specifies, which for most modern vehicles is somewhere between 10,000 and 20,000 miles, or every twelve months, whichever comes first.

The twelve-month part matters as much as the mileage. Oil degrades with time and moisture as well as use, so a car doing 4,000 miles a year still needs an annual change.

Some driving justifies changing it more often than the book says:

• Mostly short journeys where the engine never fully warms up.
• Heavy stop-start town driving.
• Towing or regularly carrying heavy loads.
• High-mileage engines, particularly turbocharged ones.
• Long periods where the vehicle sits unused.

Short-journey driving is the one that catches people out. The engine never gets hot enough to boil off the moisture and fuel that condense into the oil, so it degrades far faster than the mileage suggests.

Signs Your Oil Needs Changing

Ideally you change it on schedule rather than on symptoms, but these are worth acting on:

• An oil service or interval light on the dash.
• Oil on the dipstick that is thick, black and gritty rather than translucent.
• A noisier engine, particularly a ticking on start-up.
• A burning oil smell.
• The level dropping between checks.

A red oil pressure warning light is different and more serious. Stop as soon as it is safe and do not keep driving, as low oil pressure destroys an engine quickly.
