Signs Your Exhaust Needs Attention

Exhaust faults are usually easy to spot once you know the signs:

• A blowing or rasping noise, loudest on a cold start and under acceleration.

Blowing Exhausts

A blowing exhaust means gas is escaping somewhere it should not. Usually that is a corroded section, a failed joint or gasket, a cracked weld, or a broken mounting letting the system knock about.

It is more than a noise problem. If the leak is ahead of the oxygen sensors, the readings go out and the engine fuels incorrectly, which shows up as poor economy, rough running and sometimes an engine management light.

Left alone, a small leak grows. Escaping gas is hot and fast-moving, and it erodes the metal around it, so the cheap early fix becomes a larger replacement.

If the system is heavily corroded throughout, patching one area just moves the problem six inches along, and you end up paying twice within the year. In that case a full section or system replacement is the cheaper answer over any sensible timeframe.

Catalytic converters are expensive, and the important thing to understand is that they rarely fail on their own.

Most are killed by something else: a long-running misfire dumping unburnt fuel into the exhaust, oil or coolant getting past worn seals, or a fuelling fault running the engine rich. The cat is the casualty, not the cause.

Which is why fitting a new one without finding out what killed the old one is money badly spent. The new one goes the same way.
