It's one of the most common worries we hear, and it puts a lot of drivers off using a local garage. The good news is that servicing your car at a reputable independent garage like West Auto won't void your manufacturer's warranty - as long as the work is done properly. Here's exactly how that works, and what you need to keep things watertight.

Your protection comes from what's usually called Block Exemption. Until 2023 this was the retained EU Motor Vehicle Block Exemption Regulation; since 1 June 2023 it has been the UK's own Motor Vehicle Agreements Block Exemption Order 2023, which runs until May 2029. The detail has changed over the years, but the principle hasn't: a manufacturer cannot force you to use their main dealer network for routine servicing just to keep your warranty valid.
In plain terms, you're free to have your car serviced wherever you like during the warranty period. The same rules also require manufacturers to give independent garages access to their technical data, diagnostic tools and software - so the work can be done to exactly the same standard as a franchised dealer.
Your warranty stays intact as long as the service is done by the book. Three things matter.
To the manufacturer's schedule
The service needs to follow the correct schedule and specification for your car, carried out at the right intervals.
With matching-quality parts
Any parts, oils and fluids used must be "matching quality" - either genuine or made to the manufacturer's specification. Block Exemption specifically allows this, so you're not tied to dealer-only parts.
Properly recorded
The work needs to be documented, with your service book stamped or your digital service record updated, and the correct parts shown on the invoice.
Get those three right and there's simply no room for a dispute later.

This is the part that gets misunderstood. A manufacturer can only reject a specific warranty claim if the fault can be directly traced to poor workmanship or a substandard part - and the burden of proof sits with them, not you. Even then, it's that one claim that's affected, not your whole warranty.
What genuinely puts a warranty at risk is the same whoever does the work: skipping scheduled services, fitting cheap non-spec parts, or unapproved modifications like a remap that then causes a failure. None of those are about choosing an independent garage.
We service to your manufacturer's schedule using the correct specification for your car, fit matching-quality parts and oils, and record everything properly - so your warranty stays protected and you've got the paperwork to prove it. You get main-dealer standards without the main-dealer price.
