This is a service we're bringing to West Auto soon - it isn't available just yet.
We're expanding what we offer campervan and motorhome owners in Newcastle, and habitation checks are on the way. Right now we're working towards the qualifications needed to carry them out properly, so we're not booking them in yet. This guide explains what a habitation check is and why it matters, so you're ready when we launch - and in the meantime, we can still look after the mechanical side of your camper through our campervan repairs.

A habitation check is a detailed inspection of the living area of your campervan or motorhome. It's not about the engine or the mechanical side - it's about the systems that make it your home on wheels: gas, water, electrics and the structure itself. It's separate from your MOT and your mechanical service.
In the UK a habitation check isn't a legal requirement, but it's strongly recommended - especially if your camper is still under manufacturer's warranty, or if you're thinking of selling it down the line.

Safety
Gas appliances, ventilation and electrics are checked for the kind of faults that can lead to gas leaks, fire or carbon monoxide.
Catching damp early
Damp testing finds water ingress before it rots floors and walls - the most common and most expensive campervan problem there is.
Protecting your warranty
Many manufacturers require an annual habitation check to keep the water-ingress warranty valid, so skipping one can cost you cover.
Holding its value
A well-kept habitation area keeps minor issues from turning into big bills, and helps your camper hold its value when you come to sell.

Once the service goes live, a habitation check will typically include:
Gas safety
Leak testing and checking all gas appliances operate correctly.
Electrical systems
Testing the 230V mains and 12V leisure systems for safe operation.
Water systems
Checking the fresh and waste systems, pump and taps for leaks and correct operation.
Ventilation and damp
Confirming safe airflow and testing for moisture or water ingress.
Windows, doors and seals
Making sure they open, close and seal securely.
Fire and safety equipment
Testing smoke alarms, carbon monoxide detectors and extinguishers.
Fixtures and fittings
Checking furniture, appliances and fittings for wear or damage.

Most owners have a habitation check every 12 months. It's even more worthwhile if your camper sits unused over winter, when a small leak or a bit of damp can go unnoticed for months - and, as above, an annual check is often what keeps a manufacturer's warranty valid.

We're getting properly qualified to carry out habitation checks, and we'll announce it right here as soon as the service goes live. If you'd like us to let you know when it's available, get in touch and we'll keep you posted.
In the meantime, we can still help with the mechanical side of your campervan - servicing, repairs and MOTs. Take a look at our campervan repairs, or call us on 0191 271 1605 and we'll be glad to help.
